Artist Statement
In creating artwork, my intention is to capture the diversity of life in all of its strangeness. Most of the time I find life to be quite humorous which can be seen in some of my more lighthearted works such as "Forging Ahead". In my past as a counselor, I have also experienced some of the darkness of life. You will see some very serious pieces such as "Birth by Shedding"in which I aim to explore the complexities of domestic violence. Whether it be humorous or serious my goal in doing art is to learn from the creative process. I paint, etch, carve, build...you name it! I also love to do found object assemblages and most of my friends leave items on my porch to support my habit.
I am a graduate of the University of Missouri. I left Columbia in 1986 and headed to Kansas City, where I taught art for the inner-city school district. This is where I learned more deeply about the healing power of art, which eventually led me to complete a master's degree in counseling and schooling in art therapy. I have since returned to Columbia Mo., and have joined the Orr Street Studios.
I am once again on my journey as an artist. For 10 years, I let fear paralyze my creativity. After studying with Rhonda Britten, author of Fearless Living, Fearless Loving and Emmy award winning life coach of the TV series "Starting Over", I became a Fearless living life coach and stepped back into my passion as a professional artist. I no longer let fear hinder my creativity. My mission in life is to help others break the barriers of fear. I welcome you today to laugh, think, and enjoy the creative results of my work.
